Adult Education French Classes
My name is Chris and I teach at OuiCommunicate, a school that I started in 2018. We specialize in teaching French to adults.
My own experience with adult education began when I was 34 as I went back to college (uni) for a Masters degree. In the process, I also learned German. Those 6 years got me intimately acquainted with the challenges of learning at a later age.
I had to invent a system of learning that would work for an adult who had no technique at all in order to pass my exams. The solution I found was structure and clarity. This approach to learning is exactly what you will find in our French classes.
Our French classes explained
I like to say that OuiCommunicate is where tradition meets technology. There is a use of the internet to be able to learn at any time and propose a never-ending French class. It opens up many possibilities for a better learning experience than a brick-and-mortar school.
The traditional side of our method can be seen in the academic angle of our French classes. We offer no games or funny stories. We want you to understand how French works and go straight to the core of the matter.
Well suited to adults facing a busy life, our students are under no pressure to book classes regularly. When you sign up, you can start learning straight away as an independent learner. You only book a class with your teacher for a one-on-one evaluation of your skills when you feel comfortable.
You will be guided through the French language by your teacher. He will recommend exercises to do and videos to watch. You only book a 20 minute class when you feel comfortable to discuss your latest progress.
As adults you’ll want independence as well as guidance and we offer the best of both worlds. You can stay in contact with your teacher by email to ask any question you wish. And you can do a lot of the learning alone as it suits your schedule.
This website is like a 24/7 French school. Click on the video of your choice and learn a new skill. There is listening, reading and writing. The speaking part will gradually be integrated into our meetups. But before we do that, there are more important things to learn first!
Why French classes for adults?
I believe it takes one to know one. I was an adult learner myself and can put this experience to the service of adults. It takes psychology and the desire and patience to enable adult learners achieve their goals in French.
In high school, I learned under a certain teaching logic that older adult learners are familiar with. There are trends in education that older “pre-internet” learners will find in this website.
There is also the human element that our generation still remembers from the 70s and 80s. You were treated as a human who mattered and “not having enough time” was not seen as a good excuse. At OuiCommunicate, we approach you as an individual with their own circumstances and dispositions towards learning French. We create a sense of belonging that is reminiscent of an older way of doing business. We know each others’ names and we belong. It’s not about business growth, sales and big takeovers.
The next reason is the format and the worksheets that I built following a method that had worked for me when I learned German and Dutch. In “those times”, we wrote things down and used pen and paper. It wasn’t all about shortcuts and “hacks” to do the least amount of work.
I want my students to feel comfortable in wanting to understand French rather than press buttons on the latest app. As such, French is explained thoroughly and in slow motion. The learning material is inclusive to all and is designed for all to understand.
The learning you will find on this website reflects a more classic approach to languages. We have written exercises, clear explanations and a true purpose that we pursue. We want to use French while understanding what we are doing. We are not button-pushers falling victinm to the latest youth trend. We want to enjoy quality learning and service at a reasonable cost.
