French Classes for busy people
At OuiCommunicate, we looked at the learning problems that were caused by a certain tradition. There was a big loss of quality in the learning that also caused a lot of time to be lost.
What students could have done in weeks they did in months until eventually they hit a wall and stagnated at the same level of French.
The problem came because of the belief that the learning happened during the class, and that they could forget about it until next week. We know that this makes as much sense as believing that a business meeting is the place where you work on your presentation. Sorry, no. You do that part beforehand not during.
But we can’t blame these students. After all, it’s the schools that implemented this model. They just believed that language learning was the same. But it all depends on the definition we give to a “class”.
On their public reviews, you will see that most language schools mention the students’ feelings. “It was fun” or “I loved my class” but rarely a mention of quality.
We wanted to be known for quality, not for fun. Unless we changed some of the rules, we knew we would have no control over the learning quality.
The changes we made all went in the direction of flexibility because that’s what is needed to learn in the best conditions. It’s the regular schedules that prevent from learning well, precisely because the class becomes a habit. Once the French class becomes a regular thing in your week, the quality goes downhill.
As a busy person looking for classes, our way of operating will suit you well. We have no more classes and no more fixed appointments. We’ve entirely put the learning in your hands and you only book a quick 20 minute meetup online when you’ve learned something.
The teacher is just as present and just as involved, but takes on a different role. We no longer “pretend” that something is happening in a 60 minute class and no longer play that game.
Before, the student had the habit of saying: “OK, tell me what we’re doing today.” But now it’s us who ask that question. We flat out refuse to cause you a loss of time or money any more.
Since it’s all online, you literally study at any time of day or night you want. (By the way, this is free. What a cost saver!)
When you feel you’ve made progress or a little breakthrough, you book a short 20 minute class (a “meetup” more exactly) and you talk about your achievements with your tutor who will test you on this.
Your tutor will asses your knowledge of French and guide you towards the various exercises and videos on this website. Each of these exercises contain a precise skill that you need to get good at French.
Will we speak any French? Of course we will. The more you learn, the more we will be able to include French. But we won’t chat at all costs. We want our classes to have a purpose, otherwise we’re being sidetracked and wasting time.

Thanks to the Internet, there is no more need to be present in the same room to conduct a successful language class. There are actually many reasons why in-person classes are less effective, slower and quickly lead to becoming “hobby-classes”.
