French classes for Brits living in Eymet

Hello fellow Brit, I'm Chris. French teacher at OuiCommunicate.
I bring a solution to Brits all over France who've tried and failed learning French with typical French methods.
This time, you can learn with one of your own.
Let's talk about Eymet
They say that Eymet counts as much as 30% Brits who’ve come to escape the rainy skies of Britain and enjoy a sunny slice of Dordogne. Mostly, the cohabitation goes well but there can be some frustration from certain French residents.
“Ils devraient apprendre le francais” they might say. And it makes sense because it’s common courtesy towards the host country.
But the matter isn’t so easy: Many Brits have tried and failed to learn French – mainly due to French teaching methods that created a meaningful obstacle.
As insiders to teaching, we realize full well the difficulties you are likely facing when trying to learn French in France. Not only do you have to learn how to learn a language, but you also have to pierce teaching methods that are foreign to you as a Brit.
The French usually don’t speak English as natives and have but little clue what it feels like to be a Brit approaching French.
This creates a disconnect in the class due to French teachers being “too French”. Ideally, you’d need “less French” and “more Brit” and we have this in store.
Become our next "success story"!
The lady in this video is originally from New York and wished for us to help prepare her move to France.
Today, she is fluent and happily lives in Occitanie where she meets new people and uses French daily.
Her victory is to be able to find the “real France” through her use of French and make of it a richer experience.
A British problem we can solve
My name is Chris and I came from the Midlands to the USA where I set up my online French school. I would describe myself as a British European: I grew up speaking English (my mum is from Nottingham) and I learned French as a native also. I am a QTS language teacher in the UK.
The advantage I offer Brits is to bridge English and French together like few French teachers could do. Not only do I know English and French as a native, but I also teach them both. I can anticipate the errors you make and find the words to explain how to correct yourself. Nothing is lost in translation in my classes.
Let me explain: any learner of a language will be influenced by their first language because that’s what makes sense to them. A French teacher who isn’t completely competent in English will find it hard to adapt their teaching to your circumstances.
There is also the perception that learning with a French person is yet another obstacle that is added to the task of learning French.
Because I speak English (and French) as a native, and also teach it, I am able to see with complete transparency into your starting point.
Which French do you need in Eymet?
There are two good reasons to learn French in Eymet: the fact that France is tightening the laws, and your day-to-day needs. (doctors, shops….)
While British expats in Eymet who were already legally resident before January 1, 2021, and hold a WARP are largely exempt from the new, stricter language tests for their residency permit renewals, they would still need to learn French if they pursue citizenship. More importantly, learning French profoundly enhances your daily life, integration, and overall experience in France.
If we think about the skills you would need to get around in Eymet, the list is quite short:
- Straightening your French pronunciation
- Expressing things you did or that happened
- Learning the relevant “naming words”
- Counting money and euros
- Asking open and closed questions
- Building a negative sentence
- Expressing a future intention
- Using “I can, I must, I would like…”
Once you have these basic skills, chances are your French will improve naturally because you will have gotten over the “first hump” that all learners climb.
When it comes to formal language exams organized by the French State, these are daunting and with good reason. (they even had native speakers do some of these tests and they didn’t score too highly either!)
Here’s where the difficulty lies: a test is a formatted assessment of your skills. The atmosphere is usually tense and the skills they expect you to prove are closer to a series of boxes they tick. It’s robotic and pre-determined. It requires specialized preparation in view of this specific test.
If we compare it to a driving test, it’s not all about steering your car and operating the blinkers. Yes, being able to drive is a crucial component of the test, but it’s not all. French tests are the same.
So while knowing how to speak French is crucial for an official test, it doesn’t guarantee passing it.
If you are in a position of having a weak use of French, you will then have to learn “everyday French” as well as “test French” – to put it simply. That’s two jobs.
At OuiCommunicate, we prepare you for the first job by helping you learn “everyday French”. It is a task that we can make a lot easier for you than if you were to learn this with either a local French school or with a testing center.
The value of our offer is also in our insider’s knowledge of France as natives and knowing the British psychology – so to speak.

About OuiCommunicate online French
My French school moved from the UK to the USA when I moved here after I got married. The school is physically based in the small State of Connecticut on the East coast. We are 6 hours behind France.
Because of the time difference, our face-to-face classes start at 3PM French time.
The rest of the time, we run these classes as a 24/7 operation: all our classes are pre-recorded on video and are matched with a worksheet. For each topic we have a video and worksheet to complete. Your teacher acts as a coach to guide you through your personal learning plan. The best part of it is that it’s all explained from the point of view of English.
Your teacher Chris can also act as your own cross-cultural expert in all matters French. With an exposure to France going back over 30 years, we are able to explain the slightest aspects of French customs and behaviour in detail.
When we first meet for a video call, Chris will quickly assess your level of French. he then assigns you a learning program which you complete in your own time. When you feel ready to meet up and discuss your latest progress, you book a 20 minute class.
For learners who are more advanced and can already converse we have a Conversation plan that equally gives access to all our resources. There are usually a few points of French that even the best students are happy to revisit.
