Why learn French before moving?
As one who has changed countries twice let me tell you: time flies when you’re abroad! There is so much to deal with. Attending classes in France will be the last thing on your mind. You’ll want to get accustomed to the new surroundings, give yourself time to unwind…and before long those French classes are a distant project. But hey! The French you have allows you to survive right? People understand you OK? Why learn any more?
There is nothing in this scenario that thousands of other retirees haven’t tried before you. But here’s what will actually happen: yes, you’ll survive with your broken French. Yes, it will give you the impression all is well. But two things will happen: you will miss out on a lot of understanding about what France is about. And you won’t make friends because people will instinctively label you as “foreigner” and know that it’s too much trouble trying to know you any better. We are tribal people and it is a subconscious reaction.
Without the French language you will become a spectator in France but not a participant. You will enjoy your status as visitor, laying eyes on only the aspects you choose such as the bread or the architecture. But the real France will be unknown to you.
You may want to choose to live in this bubble and so many others do. But the scenery and the food do not define France. It is the way the French think and the messages they express to one another.
Once in France, you may begin to look for French classes but here another problem will arise. The first is the fact of stepping into an industry with which you are unfamiliar. What defines a good school from a bad one? Is it the reviews? Is it the price? It can be tricky to know considering you have the language barrier as an obstacle to make an informed purchase.
Another problem is that the average French person hardly knows English. The language school staff will know basic English but will never know what it’s like to have English as a native language. They have no idea of your “psyche” or of what makes sense to you.
As a result, they will teach you French from their point of view. They will be telling you this is how we do things but without knowing how you think as a speaker of English.
France is a country of tradition, which is why we are attracted to it in the first place. But this tradition is also seen in the “FLE classes” that are deeply embedded in a franco-French way of teaching. These classes will seem foreign to you and very little accessible. Even your French classes will pose a cultural and language barrier.
My advice is to make the best choice while still in your country and with a cool head. Give yourself time to learn French and prepare well. Being in France will not make learning easier despite the many potential opportunities for practice. Only a planned reparation before departure will help you settle in France in the best conditions.
