Notes on our French sessions
Meeting 1 – 9 Dec 2024
Summary: we did our first assessment of your studying. ER verbs in the present tense. Pronunciation. The sound of the singular (E) and of the plural (les) We touched upon the “liaisons” sounds of which I saw you were well aware existed. We checked the pronunciation of the the irregular OIR verbs (je peux /ils veulent…) We mentioned the importance of consistency = always the same sound for the same letter. We corrected the sounds un/une and talked about the liaisons with the N towards a vowel. We tried random French verbs to check that the “formula” was well understood.
Next: We will need to do the Present tense in full (all 4 classes), whatever happens. I would also make sure the document on French pronunciation is well learned. “Sounds and Letters of French” in the pronunciation section. We must also check all the nasal sounds = in/ain/en/an…And if you feel comfortable using the OIR verbs, you can also look at the Modal verbs in the conjugation section (there are 2 documents)
Meeting 2 – 20 Dec 2024
Summary: we did a revision on the Present tense with all 4 types of verbs. I asked questions to Thad to hear the pronunciation and use of conjugation. It went very well and we insisted on the necessity of pronouncing A very sharply and also that words ending in “in/ain/ein/ien” should all rime. (cousins/chien/matin) They shouldn’t sound like EN. We also corrected the sound of “un” – other wise pronunciation is good. we briefly mentioned how to build negative sentencesm which will be our next thing along with asking questions and possessives.
Next: We will look at negative sentences, possessives and questions. I will send Thad questions so that he may record his voice and build more elaborate answers.
Meeting 3 – 07 jAN 2025
Summary: Thad explained to met that he found asking question in French OK and that he understood most of the negative apart from the more advanced points. He shared with me concern about direct/indirect object and when it applies to “de”. All seems well on track!
Next: I advised to start on the Passe Compose, to send me the Homework milestone for pronunciation, and to start looking at “parce que”.
