These classes may not be in France at all
Here's 4 reasons why:
The notion of “social aquarium”
If you’ve been in France for a while, you’ll know that traditions run deep. The authenticity that is so endearing also reflects in the teaching of French. As the product of a certain “social aquarium”, the average French tutor teaches according to those traditions. The issue for students is that their mind is attuned to English. A French teacher from France cannot know what it feels like to be you. This creates a breakup in communication and in learning.
Standardized practices
We’ve all heard of the so-called “best” and most well-known school of French, present in many countries of the world. The fact is that they never claimed to be the best. In fact, their role is similar to the Christian missionaries of yesteryear. They are subsidized by the French government in an effort to spread the French culture and language abroad. When an organization reaches such a size they are forced to standardize the teaching practices. Every one of their teachers must follow a pre-determined program with very little room for the creativity so central to teaching. Call it boring? We’d say so!
Monolingual VS bilingual
France is by definition (and by law) a very monolingual country. You might not have ever seen a sign in any other language apart perhaps in the airport. As such, French teachers are not raised in a plurality of languages or cultures. They function in French all their lives until they one day become French teachers. They effectively become speakers of one language. As a student, chances are that you would find French much easier if you learned with a bilingual teacher.
Linguistics VS Clutter
France is proud of their heritage and rightly so. The wine, the cheese, the different regions…The problem is that this trivia has a way of making it to the French class and act as clutter that slows down your learning. A Linguistics-based teacher has no interest which grapes grow in which valley. A lot of teachers you will meet have but little qualifications and feel it necessary to “gamify” the learning and include “cultural clutter”. By finding a bilingual teacher with an academic background in Linguistics, you will make your journey twice as effective. You will understand that teacher much better and you will get straight to the point.
