French classes for older adults
My name is Chris and I teach at OuiCommunicate, a school that I started in 2018. We specialize in teaching French to adults and this includes “older” adults – however you define this age group.
Our classes are suited to adults of all ages, and with good reason. I myself went back to college (uni) at age 34 and learned German in the process. I know the challenges and how it feels.
I went to high school at the tail end of the “old” system, when we still privileged memorization, writing things down and using pens and paper. The term “hack” wasn’t invented nor was the internet.
These are two foundational parts of our French classes.
Our classes explained
Our school is where tradition meets technology. Yes, we use the internet to be able to learn from anywhere and at any time. In this sense, we use the advantages that are given to us and why not? This allows us to propose a never-ending class to suit your schedule.
It is also true that our teaching follows a somewhat traditional method in that students will find a more academic angle to our French classes. No games, no funny stories and no waste of time either. We clearly explain each French notion in view of giving you valuable tools to be able to use French.
Our students are under no pressure to perform or book classes. Once you’ve signed up, you can start learning straight away. You need only book a class with your teacher to do a one-on-one evaluation of your skills when you feel like it. Study first, and when you want to be evaluated for further guidance, you may.
The role of the French teacher (myself) will be to guide you through the learning and recommend exercises. You book a 20 minute class when you feel comfortable to discuss your latest progress.
We aim to make the learner the hero of the story and minimize the role of the teacher. You have all manner of videos and exercises to be able to learn 24/7.
As well as providing you with a flood of French (videos and PDF), we also aim to make learning affordable. Since this is a long run, we don’t propose ruinous classes billed by the hour. Instead, we want to propose a quality way of learning French in which you can control the costs.
You will learn under the guidance of a university-qualified teacher who is a native speaker of both English and French. This rare skill, combined with a one of a kind teaching method guarantees a world-class experience.
Why adult education?
The choice of teaching adults was an easy one. As a former adult learner, I am in a better place to coach adults. Our respective experience in school and attitude towards learning is more similar than what a youth experiences in school today.
Adults from an older generation also understand the value of the human element in a world where everything seems automated and made to feel younger and faster. It is probable that our society suffers from an adoration of all things “young” in the manner of a collective illusion. We don’t quite know why we think this, but anything modern is deemed better than tradition. We no longer question it, and rather accept this as fact.
As pertains to teaching languages, I have noticed that all the nonsensical inventions of the day were made by, or aimed at young people. Always looking for the latest shortcut, always looking to reinvent the wheel.
I believe that age is not as important as our society makes it out to be. There is value in wisdom and there is a place for people over 35. We might not be able to qualify for a sports team anymore, but so what? We can still learn a language much better than youths learn in school, at any rate!
Learning a language can act as a therapy and medication rolled into one. It does wonders for the brain and has been known to prevent cognitive loss. After all, with two languages you have double the number of connectors in your brain. Instead of naming things in one language, you can now do it in two. And what a workout for the brain!
